Much better dressing today. It has a little fat (and fat is flavor), and a bit of tartness. No weird, slimy aftertaste as yesterday’s garbage. Not exceptional by any means, as expected, but it was fine and didn’t ruin my salad.

This begs the question - do Italians actually eat Italian dressing? How about the Russians and Russian dressing? Or are these just pale imitations of ethnic foods dumbed down for American palates? I would assume that Italian dressing started out like what I generally use on salads - olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt, pepper and a few herbs and spices (less than 11, none of them secret...)

I thought Russian dressing was just vodka?

# Butforreals, I’ve never heard of Russian dressing.

Well, last time I was in the ER they put me in a ward that they said used to be occupied by the psych patients, so who knows. I’m just trying to have a little fun and goof about since I don’t know when I’m getting out of this place. And today I found out that my room was last occupied by a 19 year old guy with autism that was in here for 30 days. He went a little bonkers and tried to rip everything off the walls, as well as breaking the bathroom door - it doesn’t fit the opening and can’t be closed. Most of the other damage has been repaired, but you can tell something went down in here.

Hmm - maybe it’s this room that drives people wacko...

It’s an American thing, like thousand island, and commonly used on a Rueben sandwich.

Y ou've never heard of Russian dressing? Have you ever eaten a Rueben? If so, you have likely eaten the dressing and didn't realize it.

Russian dressing contains ketchup along with other crap, which makes me suspicious that it’s not * entirely* Russian.

Yup - “ Russian dressing is a piquant American salad dressing consisting of mayonnaise with ketchup and other ingredients. Russian dressing is a key ingredient in a Reuben sandwich.”

Do residents of Catalina Island like Catalina dressing? Hmm - the mystery deepens...

The nationality stuff gets me.

Over there you have English crumpets, that are nothing like our crumpets,

English Muffins, which until quite recently (last ten years) I’ve never seen outside of McDonalds.

In Poland they sell ‘Angielski szynka’ English ham, in a tin. While in Poland I bought some, got it home to Stare Sioo , and it was more like a paste than actual tinned ham, yet in the U.K. we sell English and Polish tinned ham and it’s the same stuff.

So when I go to another country and it has the name of another country on (ie France and the product says German, Germany but the product says Italian) , I take it with a pinch of salt that it has anything to do with that country.

Thankfully the stuff we sell in our store and around the U.K. that says Polish is in fact from Poland and has had an English label added to it for U.K. labelling laws.

More like “yuk” than “yup”.

3/4 cup veggie oil

1/3 cup lime juice (fresh) .

Teaspoon lime zest

Half cup cilantro

2 Serranos rough chop

Salt

Blend til smooth.  Still my favorite salad dressing

One that comes immediately to mind over here is Canadian bacon, which is more like a lean, round slice of ham. In Canada, bacon is the same bacon Americans eat, and what we call Canadian bacon they call back bacon.

No logic to any of this naming stuff, and if you try to figure it out you’re just going to give yourself a headache...

Sitting in my fridge right now is a whole slab of maple bourbon bacon that I was going to cook up for dinner on Friday. I look forward to d eventually getting out of here so I can enjoy some good, fatty foods for a change. Everything they've been serving me had been relatively healthy, and I want some grease...

Well I had to throw out my ribeye steak, it had turned and well, nevermind.

So I may have to get a gammon joint tomorrow aft e r work.

I had my binge session the other day (no I didn’t eat it all at once, I ate less than half then nibbled at it later and then finished it the following morning).

Well, if it turns I won’t feel too bad. Beef is too expensive, so I only bu y it on markdown.

It was cheaper than wanted as I asked for a one inch thick ribeye and he cut it to less than an inch, but because there was others in the queue, I just thought sod it. Came to $12.—, where it would of been $30 had the guy knew how big an inch was. I would of been annoyed with myself had I wasted that much.

But I’m going through a stage right now of cooking, then not cooking, eating, then not eating.

I got a couple of good flat iron steaks which are always cheap, about $6.— each.

About 4" by 4", just under an inch thick.

Kinja'd!!!

This is half a one, my step-father doesn’t eat much so I had the other half of his steak.
